Faith in Human Nature Department

If you're not checking out Jim Romenesko's Obscure Store and Reading Room on a daily basis, you can bet that your local wacky disc jockey is—he probably gets a lot of his "funny" news stories there. One report about fast food customer tantrums prompted this comment from a reader:
Anyone who has worked food service has definitely had food thrown at them. Even the nicest, sweetest, most customer-service-oriented employee in the place (as I was at aged 19). I never worked fast food per se, but I worked the snack bar at a movie theater. There didn't have to be too much wrong with a hot dog or soft pretzel to send some people right off. If we had called the police every time it happened, they would have had to set up a police precinct station in the lobby.
The low pay in the customer service sector is more than enough to explain why they can't hold on to good people, but it's not the only reason. There's also that unfortunate human tendency to treat others like crap when they can do it with impunity.
