All in the Timing

Not sure why this strikes me so funny, but our Preznit has clearly not allowed the campaign to interfere with his official responsibilities:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 2004 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The beauty part is, this proclamation was dated October 21st. We were three weeks into National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and we didn't even know it! How will I ever finish all my preparations in time?

Last year the same was proclaimed on October 3rd, 2003, so it's perhaps fair to say that George has let a few things pile up in his IN box just lately. On the other hand, maybe this is the October Surprise everybody seems to be waiting for, the one that's supposed to catapult our Prezzy to re-election. It may be as close to an O.S. as he can reasonably expect to accomplish.

Predictably, while most stores are already displaying Christmas merchandise before Halloween, National Disability Employment Awareness Month is relegated to the back seat in the public consciousness. I half-expect an announcement any minute now that last month was Take a Librarian to Dinner Month. Sorry you missed it.

November will also be officially declared to spotlight awareness of some other pressing public issue. We're not sure yet what that will be, but we can look forward to an announcement some time around Thanksgiving.
