The Complete Idiot's Guide to Brazen Mendacity

Bill Press breaks down the politics of lying.

Newsweek relied on faulty intelligence to write a magazine article. George W. Bush relied on faulty intelligence to start a war which has cost over $200 billion, and which has taken the lives of over 1600 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Here's the difference. Newsweek didn't know its intelligence was phony. And Newsweek apologized.

Some comic I heard once made a comparison that fits here. When the Bush White House complains that Newsweek has somehow misled the public, it's like getting a visit from the cops because the crack house next door complained that you haven't mowed your lawn.
