The wonders of marketing

I'm incapable of getting excited about the Super Bowl, since I'm not a sports fan. As a movie fan, then, am I obligated to take an interest in the Oscars? I think not.

You know when you go into a car dealer, and they have all these "awards" hanging on the walls, saying what a great dealership it is? And they're all awarded by the manufacturer of the cars they're selling? You think there's any chance of an ulterior marketing motive behind those awards? Yeah, me too. And that's what the Oscars remind me of.

And the Oscar telecast reminds me of those old MGM promo reels they show on Turner Classic Movies sometimes. "Always tops in filmed entertainment!"
