It doesn't take much any more, evidently
My big excitement for the week was finding a cheap DVD of The Blob, the 1988 version. Almost as corny as the original, but a lot more violent. There's something about the Blob that's funny and totally unhinged at the same time, like Lovecraft gone over the edge. And the trailer is so bad it's hilarious, with the Voice of Doom announcer grimly reciting, "Evil ... HAS NO SHAPE!" Oh God, I'm afraid that I owe my escape from the grip of sanity to movies like this one, and I don't know how to thank them.
It just yesterday occurs to me that I'm not only collecting horror movies, I'm collecting gory remakes of old horror movies. The Blob, The Thing, The Fly (and its much funnier sibling The Fly II)—maybe it's been that long since anybody invented a good original premise for a horror movie. The original Blob I thought was a decent movie based on a brilliant premise that stripped itself down to its bare essentials. Has anybody thought of a new horror movie idea since then? The closest one I can think of offhand is One Hour Photo, gur bayl bar V xabj jurer abobql qvrf [rot13, in case you haven't seen it yet].
